Answers to Frequently Asked Administrative Questions

1. What personal information is this site collecting?

We do not collect any personal information; however, Google Analytics is being used on this site to better understand things like how you're finding the resources, which of our resources you're using, and from which country you're accessing them.

2. How much do these resources cost?

Use of these resources is completely free!

3. What technical requirements are necessary to use this site?

Minimal technical requirements are necessary to use our resources. Visit our system requirements page for more information.

4. Are additional resources coming?

Yes! Over time we hope to add several other courses and more interactive components to this site. An exact schedule for these planned components, however, has not yet been determined.

5. Do I receive any form of recognition for completing these resources?

The resources on this site are strictly that: resources. They should not be viewed as a massive open online course (a "MOOC") or any type of online course. As such, there is no certificate or other form of credential awarded if you review all the modules and/or score well on all the quizzes.

6. Can I get access to these materials in a language other than English?

No. Currently our resources are available only in English.

7. If I'm using this in my class, is there a way I can track how much work my students complete and how well they perform?

Though this functionality exists, the use of a grade book has not been made available because of the difficulty in abiding by all of the legal requirements in the jurisdictions that might make use of it. However, the University of Waterloo is open to negotiations about local implementations. The content would be provided free of charge, but there would be licensing costs associated with Mapleosft's deployment environment. If you are interested in a local implementation, please use the web form

8. Is there any sort of personalized tracking to which I could have access?

Features that allow you to login and pick things up where you left off and/or see how well you performed across multiple visits are coming soon!

9. I have an administrative question not listed above. What do I do?

If we haven't answered one of your questions, please review the use-related questions that follow. If those responses also don't answer your question, submit your question through the suggestions form. Please note, however, that due to the free nature of these resources and the number of requests we receive, we cannot guarantee a turn-around time for responding to messages, nor can we guarantee that all messages will get a reply. Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Use

1. How should I use these resources?

We deliberately don't want to dictate how you use our resources. They have been designed with both students and teachers in mind and while some examples are listed below, there are many more situations in which you may find them useful.

  • Students starting university or college can use these resources as refresher materials before starting or during their post-secondary classes.
  • Teachers wishing to try out a "flipped classroom" could assign some of the lectures as homework and spend more time in class practising questions.
  • Students who miss a day of school could use these resources to catch up.
  • Teachers can use the materials themselves to strengthen their understanding of certain math concepts and/or to see a different way of teaching certain topics.

2. May I use these materials in my classroom?

You definitely may use these materials in your classroom and you are encouraged to do so.

3. What resources are included on this site? How is everything organized?

The resources should be useful to students in and teachers of any Pre-Calculus (Advanced Functions) and first Calculus course. Each course contains a set of units, which can be thought of as chapters in a book. Within each unit is a set of modules, which are like a single topic or a single class. Modules contain lessons, quizzes, and – in some cases – interactive worksheets that we call investigations. Modules also contain printable exercise sheets, answers to the exercises, and detailed solutions for half of the exercise questions. (Full solutions aren't provided in case teachers would like to use some of the exercises in their classes.) Finally, each unit also contains a set of enrichment activities.

4. Where do I begin?

Where you begin is really up to you. We assume the two most common ways of accessing the materials are to click through the courses and units to find a set of modules that are interesting to you, or to enter a keyword in the search bar and find a list of units, modules, and lessons that include material about the topic you've entered.

5. Can I print these materials and/or use the electronic materials without being connected to the Internet?

Exercises, answers, solutions, and enrichment activities can be saved for use offline and easily printed with the print button in the top-right corner. The lessons, quiz engine, and interactive worksheets require Internet access to be used.

6. How do I answer the quiz questions?

Visit the how to enter math in quizzes page for details about how to input math while completing your quizzes.

7. How many practise problems are included in the quizzes?

Once you answer a quiz question, a “Try Another” button appears and can be used to repopulate the question with different values. This button can be selected as often as you would like, so there are many opportunities to repeat similar quiz questions with different values. Additionally, this functionality results in each user seeing a different set of questions while working through the resources.

8. What type of feedback do you provide?

Each module allows users to demonstrate their knowledge in a practical way through answering quiz questions. Quiz questions include both multiple choice and short answer questions that require students to input mathematical responses. All questions are then auto-graded with instantaneous feedback. The feedback presented tells users if their answers were correct or not, what the correct answers were, and a brief description of what they needed to do to find the correct answer. The math engine used in evaluating responses to quiz questions is smart enough to recognize equivalencies ( \( 0.5 = \frac{1}{2} = \frac{8}{16} = \sin\left(\frac{\pi}{6}\right)\) etc.)

Additionally, every module also has an exercises page. The questions on these pages are static, but are ideal for printing out and using offline. Answers are given for all exercise questions and full solutions are provided for half of the questions. Exercise questions allow students to practise writing out formal mathematical solutions beyond the short answer quiz questions embedded in the modules.

Finally, at the end of each unit, there is a module called “Enrichment, Extension, and Application” that includes another set of exercises, answers, and solutions. The setup of the feedback for these is similar with the exercise questions embedded in the modules themselves, but it challenges students to investigate the content at a higher level.

9. I'm still confused about the content. Where can I get more help?

We do not provide additional instruction beyond the lessons, quizzes, and investigation activities included throughout our site. If you don't understand one of the concepts, we recommend reviewing the associated resources and/or contacting a teacher or friend.
