Lesson Goals

  • Investigate different types of data.
  • Look at bias in data collection.
  • Examine different sampling techniques.

Try This

A community organization would like to start a breakfast program at the local high school to provide healthy breakfasts to students before their school day begins.  They would like to offer food that teenagers enjoy and want to make sure that they will have enough food to feed all students. They have designed a survey asking for students' input about their breakfast habits and favourite breakfast foods.  Some of the questions on the survey include:

  • Do you think that it is important for all healthy teenagers to eat breakfast?
  • How many days a week do you eat breakfast?
    1. \(0-1\)
    2. \(1-3\)
    3. \(3-5\)
    4. \(5-7\)
  • Do you like yogurt and what is your favourite flavour?

Explain to this organization why their questions are biased and suggest changes. Then help them to choose a way to select students to survey.
