You may have noticed:

  • The line segments on the graph display the distance the vehicle is along the the road with respect to the amount of time that has passed.
  • A horizontal line segment means a vehicle is not moving.

  • The slope or steepness of the line indicates how fast the vehicle is traveling. When the vehicle is moving slower, the steepness of the line segment is less than when the vehicle is traveling faster.
  • The slope of each line segment represents the constant speed of the vehicle.

You may have noticed:

  • The two vehicles start at different spots along the road. This starting point along the road corresponds to each line's initial value.

The two cars start at two different points along the road, represented by each car's displacement graph having a different y-intercept

  • The point of intersection represents the point in time when the two vehicles are at the same distance along the road. In this instance, it happens when one vehicle is passing another.​​
