Lesson Goals

  • Determine the \(x\)-intercepts/zeros of a quadratic relation given the factored form equation.
  • Determine the vertex of a quadratic relation given the factored form equation.
  • Determine the factored form equation of a quadratic relation given the \(x\)-intercepts/zeros.

Try This

A bridge has a parabolic arch support. The bridge covers a span of \(30\) metres. At its highest point, the bottom of the arch is \(25\) metres above the surface of the water.

A sailboat is approaching the bridge. The mast of the sailboat reaches \(20.5\) metres above the height of the water. Due to some people swimming in the water, the sailboat will need to pass under the bridge \(6\) metres from the centre of the bridge.

Determine if the sailboat is able to pass under the bridge.
